A more than three-decade-old taboo has finally been lifted. On the fourth day of the 2026 Six Nations, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the Italian rugby team overcame England 23-18, securing a historic triumph in front of their home fans. Since the first game between the two national teams in October 1991, the Azzurri have never defeated the Red Rose. This time, however, Italy turned the match around with a stunning comeback that captivated the Olimpico crowd and delivered a success destined to remain in the history of Italian rugby. Coach Gonzalo Quesada emphasized the significance of the result, saying, "It was a big step forward in our journey, a beautiful victory. However, we must remain humble: now is the time to celebrate our victory, but soon we will have to concentrate on the next encounter in Cardiff against Wales". When analyzing the game, the coach emphasized the difficulties encountered: "Even though we had a game plan, England caused us problems with their style, which always stretched the boundaries of the rules. In the second half, however, the bench made a difference: those who came on did precisely what we expected". Captain Michele Lamaro was visibly affected, and he spoke briefly about the historic victory: "It was a difficult match, especially because we put ourselves in danger at times. However, we all believed in it. And that is the most important thing".
