Ezio Simonelli, president of Lega Serie A, appeared on La Politica nel Pallone on GrParlamento to discuss the issue surrounding refereeing decisions, particularly in light of the recent Milan derby. According to Simonelli, the implementation of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) has greatly increased officiating accuracy in Italy's top league. "There were controversies before and still are", he said, "because errors on the pitch were tolerated, while those linked to VAR are scrutinized much more closely". While complimenting the technology, the Serie A president made it clear that VAR is not flawless. "VAR should make as few mistakes as possible, but we must also accept that it can make mistakes", according to him. Simonelli suggested a meeting with Nicola Rocchi, the chairman of the Italian Referees Association, on March 23 in order to discuss future adjustments. The goal will be to work with referees, debate guidelines, and find solutions that consider the demands of both match officials and spectators, resulting in a fair and transparent competition. Simonelli gave the following speech: "As with everything, VAR can and must be improved, and we are actively working to do so".
