Artificial intelligence is invading many aspects of daily life, including business and education, but it is also making its way into professional sports. Ukrainian athlete Maksym Murashkovskyi revealed at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics that he employed a digital assistant as an important element of his training after winning a silver medal in the biathlon. The 25-year-old visually impaired Paralympian earned silver in the men's individual biathlon competition for visually impaired athletes. Following the race, the biathlete stated that "for the last six months, I've been training with ChatGpt". According to the athlete, the software did more than just make tactical recommendations; it also assisted with physical preparation planning. He added that the computer generated "about half of my training plan". "It therefore represented a large part of my preparation," he stated. He's also used it as motivational assistance on occasion: "I've used it as a psychologist, a coach, and sometimes even as a doctor". Murashkovskyi, on the other hand, does not believe that human coaches will completely disappear. "But it will certainly happen in part", he remarked, referring to the likelihood of artificial intelligence playing a larger role in sports training. The phenomenon is, however, being observed with relative calm by top-level sports instructors. Klaus Höllrigl, technical director of the Italian national biathlon team, does not see AI as an urgent threat to coaches' employment. "The topic of artificial intelligence in sport has been around for some time", he noted. Höllrigl, who has played a role in the growth of Italian champions including Lisa Vittozzi, Dorothea Wierer, and Tommaso Giacomol, is "convinced that the role of a coach is one of the few that is not worried about competition". According to the Italian coach, what truly distinguishes an effective coach is not just the capacity to arrange training sessions, but also the human connection with the athlete: empathy, understanding, and the ability to strike the proper balance between workload, motivation, and psychological support.
