The journey toward full digitalization of Italian companies has begun, but it is still far from mature and remains marginalized in the European scene. This is what study data from the Intelligent Business Process Automation Observatory at the Polytechnic University of Milan show. In 2025, 58% of large Italian enterprises dedicated funds for the development of process automation technologies or projects, with typical investments ranging from €200,000 to €250,000. Furthermore, over half of organizations have expanded their resources for this area in the last year. Currently, 62% of large organizations use at least one process automation technology, with 30% implementing intelligent automation solutions. However, only a small percentage—just 8%—can expect widespread adoption, complemented with proper organizational models and a clear strategic direction. When it comes to small and medium-sized businesses, the disparity is even more pronounced: adoption of process automation technologies stops at 15%, despite the fact that repetitive tasks still consume 22% of working time.
