The food industry is thriving in Italy and abroad, with exports predicted to expand 4.3% by 2025, but Italian businesses are struggling to recruit skilled employees. According to a Confartigianato survey, 68,160 of the 176,450 professional positions requested by Italian food companies last year were difficult to fill. Pasta makers, bakers, pastry chefs, ice cream makers, and artisanal canners are the most in-demand jobs: out of 28,610 job openings, 16,010 (56%) were difficult to find. In particular, the position was not filled by 9,820 bakers and pasta manufacturers, which accounts for 67.6% of the 14,520 positions that companies sought. Unmet demand for pastry chefs, ice cream makers, and artisanal canners remains high, with 6,190 out of 14,090 openings advertised.
