Beatrice Venezi will be the musical director of the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. The appointment was confirmed by the Historic Theatre Foundation's Board of Directors, bringing an end to months of protests, controversy, and considerable media attention. Since September 22nd, when Venezi was appointed by Superintendent Nicola Colabianchi, theater employees, led by the orchestra musicians, have declared a state of discontent through protests, leafleting, meetings, marches, and strikes. The spotlight is mostly on the conductor's 36-year-old CV, which is deemed insufficient to oversee one of Europe's most prominent theaters. Venezi's recent words to Clarìn, an Argentine daily, provoked uproar. Venezi dismissed the protests against her as purely political (she is considered to be close to the current center-right government) and had even gone so far as to attack the Venetian public, claiming that season-ticket holders at La Fenice are "over 80" and "afraid of anything new". Venezi's reappointment at La Fenice has been approved by the mayor of the lagoon city, Luigi Brugnaro, who previously served as the Board of Directors' chairman. Brugnaro now advocated for "a decision that consciously also represents an investment in the future, not least given [Venezi's] young age". "At this point, it's evident that the matter has become completely political, therefore having a musician on the board is unnecessary. So, I am leaving". This was the outburst with which Alessandro Tortato, a board member of the La Fenice Theatre Foundation nominated by the Ministry of Culture, resigned.
