In recent years, an increasing number of couples have turned to medically assisted reproduction after failed natural attempts. This process is frequently complicated, both physically and emotionally. This is the context for MOONSHINE (ProMOting and mOdelliNg phySiological syncHronization In iNfertile couplEs), a University of Pisa project that incorporates mindfulness into medically assisted reproductive treatments. The goal is to alleviate stress and increase the couple's psychophysiological well-being while also developing and testing a mathematical model for predicting pregnancy that considers not just physiological but also emotional and relational factors. "Several studies", notes Mimma Nardelli, professor of bioengineering at the University of Pisa and project coordinator, "demonstrate that the practice of mindfulness can reduce anxiety and depression in infertile women, potentially improving the likelihood of conception. The MOONSHINE project was established to assist couples about to embark on Medically Assisted Reproduction by providing a program combined with mindfulness practice, overseen by psychologists from the participating centers. Throughout the program, we evaluate the couple's physiological synchrony and stress levels using minimally invasive wearable sensors that record autonomic nervous system signals". The University of Pisa's bioengineering team has created novel algorithms for measuring the synchronization of physiological dynamics between partners, as well as mathematical models capable of correlating autonomic nervous system activity, physiological synchronization, psychological state, and stress levels. "The results so far", Nardelli says, "reveal a considerable rise in physiological synchrony during the mindfulness process, as well as a significant association between the couple's physiological dynamics and measures related to stress and body signal awareness. We created a mathematical model for predicting pregnancy that combines data from all couples and correlates the growth of vagal activity during the mindfulness process with a psychological index that reflects the tendency to not worry or suffer in the midst of difficult conditions".
