Giorgia Meloni is interested in moving the new European Customs Agency's headquarters to Rome. "A complex but motivating challenge, to which the government is committed alongside the City of Rome, and to which we expect unanimous support from all political forces and the entire Italian system", the Prime Minister stated in her remarks to Parliament ahead of the European Council on March 19 and 20. It is an appeal for unity around a bid that sees both the center-right government and the city administration led by Democratic Party mayor Roberto Gualtieri supporting the capital. Meloni noted that Italy offers "cutting-edge" experience in customs control. Rome will compete against eight other cities: Liège in Belgium, Malaga in Spain, Lille in France, Croatia's capital Zagreb, The Hague in the Netherlands, Warsaw in Poland, Porto in Portugal, and Bucharest in Romania. The upcoming agency, known as the EUCA, will be in charge of overseeing the effective functioning of the EU single market and supporting seamless commerce. The decision is now up to the Council and the European Parliament. The final judgment will be made on March 25.
