The Ministry of Defense has decided to develop a third-generation military optical satellite system: a constellation of satellites capable of observing the Earth with high precision and providing useful imagery to the armed forces for monitoring international crises, military movements, or operational zones. These technologies have become more important in recent years. The Italian initiative isn't starting from scratch. A first wave of funding of €264 million has been allocated for 2022. At the time, the program's total cost was expected to be €590 million. However, the new directive has boosted the amount to €640 million. The initiative includes three key expenditures: €500 million to develop satellites, €90 million for space launches, and €50 million to update security and encryption systems. Since the start of the legislature, the government has presented Parliament with armament and modernization initiatives totaling €36.3 billion.
