Antico Toscano, a cigar produced in Lucca, has been recognised as a “Historic Brand of National Interest” by the Ministry for Enterprises and Made in Italy. Every year, 1,500 tons of Kentucky tobacco enter the Manifatture Sigaro Toscano (MST) plant to be processed into various types of cigars, with 60% coming from Italy, the rest from the United States and Peru. What distinguishes Lucca from the other MST facility in Cava de' Tirreni (Salerno) is its hand-rolling department, which employs 40 cigar makers (average age 45) to choose, roll, and glue the tobacco leaves. Today, it is Europe's largest hand-rolled cigar factory, generating two million of the 100 million cigars manufactured in Lucca. MST's signature product, acquired in December 2023 by Luca di Montezemolo and Piero Gnudi, is the Toscano cigar, which has captivated artists and musicians, actors and politicians, writers and filmmakers across genres. To honor this distinction, the firm has prepared a special edition consisting of three packs: one classic version upgraded with the "historic brand" emblem and two historic re-editions. MST has pushed strongly for exports in recent years, convinced of the potential of markets such as Turkey (now the leading export market), the United States (the world's largest cigar market), Eastern Europe, and China, beginning with the duty-free channel at airports, which is strategically important for cigar sales.
