Speaking on Tg4 – Diario del giorno, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto commented on developments in the war in Iran, also responding to statements by US President Donald Trump, who had suggested a “short-term” end to the conflict. "We all hope so; we don't need another war that lasts indefinitely", Crosetto said, underlining that the decision to end the conflict is solely up to the actors on the ground: the United States, Israel, and Iran. On the international security front, Crosetto reiterated Italy's position on a potential intervention in the Strait of Hormuz: "The Aspides mission in the Red Sea could be strengthened to ensure security towards the Suez Strait. Hormuz is another matter: countries have said no to a mission that could appear as entering the war". The minister expressed his desire for a multinational mission led by the United States that would include all interested states, particularly those in Asia, to maintain the Strait's security. Finally, Crosetto provided an update on the safety of Italian soldiers in Iraq following the recent airstrikes: "Some of our soldiers have been evacuated from Baghdad in complete safety and have already reached Kurdistan. From there, they will fly to Turkey before returning to Italy, thanks also to our intelligence services' cooperation".
