The Vatican Court of Appeal has declared the relative nullity of the first-instance trial involving Cardinal Angelo Becciu, broker Raffaele Mincione and Cecilia Marogna over the purchase of a property in London. The decision admits procedural mistakes but does not totally overturn the judgment: the trial and first-instance ruling continue to apply to the parties involved, and the duties of the defendants who have already been acquitted cannot be challenged. One of the key issues is the Promoter of Justice's failure to fully file the preliminary investigation file. Some documents were submitted with incomplete redactions, which violated the defendants' and defense attorneys' right to full knowledge of the information. In the first trial, Becciu was sentenced to five years and six months in jail for embezzlement and aggravated fraud in connection with the sale of the London property and the Secretariat of State's assets. The Court of Appeal ordered a new trial, establishing April 30, 2026 as the deadline for the final filing of preliminary materials and June 22, 2026 as the first hearing to determine the calendar for following sessions. Becciu's defense expressed satisfaction with the order, emphasizing that it upholds their claims from the outset, emphasizing the violation of the right to defense and the need of ensuring a fair trial.
