According to Eurostat data, life expectancy in Europe continues to climb, with Italy remaining above the average. In 2024, life expectancy at birth in the EU was 81.5 years, up 0.1 years from 2023, after falling in 2020 (80.4 years) and 2021 (80.1 years) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also topped the record from 2019, when life expectancy was 81.3 years. Italy's average age of 83.7 years remains higher than the EU norm, albeit there are minor regional variances. While life expectancy in Trento and Bolzano is 85 years (on par with the Stockholm metropolitan region in Sweden and second only to the Community of Madrid in Spain, at 85.7 years), other regions in Italy live up to three years shorter. In particular, life expectancy is 82 years in Campania, 82.5 in Sicily, and 82.7 in Calabria. At the EU level, the regions with the lowest life expectancy at birth are three in Bulgaria (Severozapaden 73.9 years, Severen tsentralen 74.9 years, and Severoiztochen 75.4 years); the other two are Mayotte in France (74.5 years) and Észak-Magyarország in Hungary (75.1 years).
