The year of Gibellina “Italian Capital of Contemporary Art” for 2026 has opened. Chosen from a shortlist that also included Carrara, Gallarate, Pescara and Todi, the Sicilian town in the province of Trapani has launched a program with a strong global vocation. Mona Hatoum, William Kentridge, Shirin Neshat, and Akram Zaatari are among the international artists represented in the "Domestic Displacement" show, while Chinese artist Liu Bolin will address the wounds caused by the earthquake that ravaged the Belice River 60 years ago. The Gibellina Photoroad festival returns in June with a project by Dutch artist Erik Kessels, while the Liu Bolin project returns in the fall. Theater installations, film festivals, and festivals such as the Orestiadi and the BAM - Biennale Arcipelago Mediterraneo will take place between June and August, with concerts, performances, and site-specific projects that explore the dialogue between visual art, theater, music, and choreography. Gibellina is already a world-famous example of a city regenerated from the ashes of an earthquake through art, with pieces by Alberto Burri, Mimmo Paladino, and Pietro Consagra dispersed throughout the urban fabric.
