Eighty-two years after the Fosse Ardeatine massacre, the memorial journey restarts with a new mission to identify the last seven unknown victims. The activity, spearheaded by the University of Florence and managed by forensic scientist Elena Pilli, intends to complete the work that began in 2010, when twelve tombs in the memorial were still marked "Unknown". Five victims have been identified over the years using an interdisciplinary approach that includes forensic anthropology, genetic analysis, and historical documentation study. The next step is to correlate known names, such as Cesare Calò, Cosimo De Micco, and Danilo Lodolo, to unidentified remains. The initiative includes both civilian and military entities, such as the Carabinieri RIS (Italian National Intelligence Unit), the Museo Storico della Liberazione (Liberation Museum), and the Jewish Community of Rome. The participation of families who have been invited to contribute testimonials and DNA samples is also important. The purpose is to restore identification and respect to the 335 victims of the Nazi massacre on March 24, 1944.
