Access will be allowed primarily to residents of Val Gardena and Val Badia, with the goal of alleviating congestion on one of the Alpine region's busiest routes. Some exemptions are granted to workers, suppliers, and guests of lodging facilities along the route, as well as individuals who can demonstrate particular travel needs. Visitors will still be able to access the area, but with more regulated procedures: roughly 150 paid parking spots will be available, which can only be reserved online. At the same time, public transportation will be improved with more regular buses and an integrated system that includes ski lifts. However, the new rules will have an impact on traffic: people seeking to travel between the two valleys will have to take alternate, lengthier routes that pass through other Dolomite passes or the Pusteria Valley. This initiative is part of a larger campaign to combat overtourism in the Dolomites, where up to 11,000 visits per day are recorded during peak season. Before it can take effect, the measure must first be approved by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano.
