In 2025, Italian enterprises and inventors filed 4,767 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO), representing a 1.8% reduction from 2024. Despite this minor dip, Italy gained in the EPO's overall rating, moving up to 10th place globally (from 11th in 2024) and 4th among EU countries (from 5th in 2024), trailing only Germany, France, and the Netherlands and ahead of Sweden. Even in 2025, transport (including automotive) remains the technological sector with the most patent applications from Italy to the EPO (451), representing a +0.4% increase over 2024, despite the general trend of a slowing down of patent applications in this area at the EPO. In the transportation sector, it is ranked 18th overall and 8th (down from 11th in 2024) among major vehicle manufacturers. The "handling" sector, which encompasses technologies related to forklifts, conveyor belts, packaging, and devices for object handling, is the second technological sector with 411 applications. The other special machinery sector (312 applications) and civil engineering (296) rank third and fourth, respectively. The latter sees a 10% increase over 2024, surpassing the medical technologies sector (270), which falls to fifth place.
