ITA Airways, the airline that replaced Alitalia, has reported its first annual net profit since launching operations, closing 2025 with a €209 million profit. The result marks a €436 million improvement compared with 2024, while revenues remained broadly stable at €3.2 billion. In 2025, ITA operated more than 123,000 scheduled flights, down 11% year-on-year, and carried 16.2 million passengers, an 8% decline compared with 2024. In a statement, the airline said the result reflected the positive impact of synergies developed with the Lufthansa Group, now its majority shareholder. At the same time, the company pointed to several operational headwinds, including reduced availability of short- and medium-haul aircraft due to progressive groundings linked to maintenance work on Pratt & Whitney engines. The carrier also highlighted the continued absence of commercial support from a partner airline on routes between Italy and the United States - its most important international market - as a limiting factor. Fleet renewal remained a key part of ITA’s strategy throughout 2025. The airline added 10 new aircraft while retiring three older-generation planes, bringing its total fleet to 106 aircraft by year-end: 24 wide-body and 82 narrow-body jets. According to the company, around 70% of the fleet is now made up of new-generation aircraft, with an average fleet age of 6.5 years. The 2025 results mark an important milestone for ITA as it seeks to consolidate its position in the European aviation market and complete its transition from the long and troubled legacy of Alitalia.
