The centre-right's setback in the justice referendum continues. Subsequent to the resignations of Justice Ministry Cabinet Chief Giusi Bartolozzi and Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro Delle Vedove, Daniela Santanchè will also be resigning as Minister of Tourism. The resignation comes after an explicit request from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. In a letter addressed to the premier, Santanchè clarifies that she chose to step down only after a public position was taken by the leader of Fratelli d’Italia. "Dear Giorgia, I hereby submit my resignation, as you have officially requested," the former minister writes. She acknowledges the work she has performed at the ministry and emphasizes that her "criminal record is spotless" and that, in relation to the redundancy fund issue, "there has not even been a simple indictment." In the letter, Santanchè expresses her sadness, adding that she does not want to be regarded as the "scapegoat" for the referendum defeat, nor does she want her comments to be associated with the Delmastro case, which she sees as "very different". Ultimately, she agrees to the prime minister's request: "I have no problem saying 'I obey' and doing what you ask". The tone is harsh, but also political and personal: "I care more about our friendship and the future of our movement", she says. The announcement of her resignation was met with applause from the opposition benches in the Chamber of Deputies. “I thought you were applauding me, but I understand that this applause was not for me", joked Deputy Speaker Giorgio Mulè, who was presiding over the session at the time.
