Lombardy has reported the first human case of avian influenza in Europe. A young man in his twenties from an African country tested positive for the low pathogenicity A(H9N2) virus. The young man, who was fragile due to pre-existing medical issues, was brought to the emergency room at San Gerardo Hospital in Monza. According to Guido Bertolaso, Regional Welfare Councillor, all individuals who had contact with the patient have been identified, examined, and tested, and no cases of infection have been identified thus far. The young man's life is not endangered, and neither is the public, according to police. The virus, which spreads mostly through contact with infected birds or contaminated items, does not pass from person to person. Avian influenza can be low- or high-pathogenic; mild instances induce only respiratory symptoms, whereas severe cases cause systemic disease and substantial mortality. The Ministry of Health stated that all checks were completed immediately, and that the situation is being closely watched in partnership with the Istituto Superiore di Sanità and a panel of international experts.
