American companies operating in Italy generate around 20% of the country's pharmaceutical industry turnover (€9.2 billion). These same global corporations manufacture a quarter of all "innovative" medications. And, as per a study conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Italy and the Luiss Business School, they have produced an economic impact of approximately €6.3 billion and "an overall direct, indirect, and induced employment impact of 22,900 people". The most well-known firms include AbbVie, Bristol Myers Squibb, Gilead, Vertex, Incyte, Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly, and Pfizer. In 2024, €180 million was invested in Italy by US companies, approximately half of the clinical trials were sponsored, over 1,000 scientific collaborations were signed, and 25% of the pharmaceuticals considered innovative were produced, according to the study. Italy is regarded as an excellent site due to the availability of advanced manufacturing technology and resources with high-level experience.
