Fabio Roversi Monaco, the prominent jurist and former rector of the University of Bologna, has died at the age of 87.
Roversi Monaco served as rector of the historic university from 1985 to 2000 and was widely regarded as one of the key figures behind its international growth and prestige during that period. Born in 1938 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - then under Italian colonial rule - he went on to build a long and distinguished academic career in law.
A professor of law for decades, he became one of the most influential figures in Bologna’s public life, both within and beyond the academic world. During his years as rector, he contributed significantly to the university’s global standing and was involved in awarding honorary degrees to major intellectuals and public figures from around the world. He also received numerous honorary distinctions himself over the course of his career.
His influence extended far beyond the university. Roversi Monaco also held senior roles in some of Bologna’s most important financial and cultural institutions, including the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio in Bologna (Carisbo), Banca IMI and Genus Bononiae, the association dedicated to cultural initiatives in the city, from exhibitions and festivals to the restoration of historic buildings.
His death marks the loss of one of Bologna’s most prominent academic and civic figures of the past several decades.
