The City of Rome has voted to prohibit smoking on the beaches of Ostia, joining a number of other municipalities that have implemented coastal smoking bans in recent years. In 2019, Bibione in Veneto became one of the first beaches to implement such a ban. Fines of €50 were levied there. Concurrently with Bibione and in succeeding years, several beaches in Liguria, Sicily, and Puglia imposed bans, as did an increasing number of Sardinian beaches during the pandemic. Porto Torres was one of the last municipalities to do so in 2024, with fines ranging from €25 to €500. Smoking on beaches was also prohibited in Olbia, where it was extended to the outdoor areas of local bars and restaurants; in San Teodoro, in addition to the ban, a surveillance service was implemented; and smoking bans have been imposed on other popular tourist beaches, including La Maddalena, the Arzachena area, Gallura, and Stintino's La Pelosa beach. Other stringent environmental protection procedures are in place. For example, to avoid mistakenly transporting sand away, place a mat under your towel or beach towel. Last summer, a smoking ban was also implemented in Riccione, a municipality with numerous renowned tourist destinations.
