Francesca Chiaromonte, Full Professor of Statistics at the Institute of Economics at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. The Fellow title is given in appreciation of outstanding contributions to the progress of science and society. Chiaromonte is one of only a handful Italians among the 449 new Fellows in the 2025 cohort. "I am deeply honored to receive this recognition, which for me represents an important confirmation of a scientific journey built over decades in which data have become increasingly abundant, complex, and essential to scientific research", says Chiaromonte. "My work has focused on the development of statistical methodologies in close dialogue with various application fields; thanks to a continuous interaction between methods and applications, I have been able to contribute to biomedical research, 'omics' sciences, and the study of the socioeconomic impacts of climate change". Francesca Chiaromonte has been named a AAAS Fellow in Statistics, "for outstanding contributions to the field of statistics, the development of methods for analyzing complex, structured, and large data, and their applications in the biomedical and social sciences"." Chiaromonte, who earned a master's degree in statistics and economics from the University of Rome La Sapienza and a PhD in statistics from the University of Minnesota, has been a Fellow of the American Statistical Association since 2016 and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics since 2022. She is currently the scientific coordinator of the Department of Excellence EMbeDS (Economics, Management, and Law in the Era of Data Science) at Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, as well as the Dorothy Foehr Huck and J. Lloyd Huck Chair in Statistics for the Life Sciences at Pennsylvania State University.
