The National Health Service will reimburse the cytisine-based drug to quit smoking. However, to benefit from state coverage, one must go to an anti-smoking center and undergo the treatment, which lasts about 25 days. Otherwise, it can be purchased out-of-pocket at a pharmacy. According to an Italian study conducted by the National Cancer Institute, 40% of patients quit 12 months after starting the medication, compared to the disappointing number of only one in ten patients who successfully quit on their own.
