A bridge over the Trigno River collapsed on Wednesday morning along State Road 16, on the border between Molise and Abruzzo, after several days of intense rainfall that has battered the area. The structure gave way while technical inspections were underway. Fortunately, the bridge had already been closed to traffic, avoiding what could have been a far more serious incident. No vehicles were crossing at the time of the collapse. The accident comes amid a broader hydrogeological emergency affecting much of the region. In Termoli, around 150 people have been evacuated because of flooding, while critical conditions have also been reported in Campomarino Lido, Guglionesi, and other exposed coastal areas.
Emergency services have strengthened rescue operations, with firefighters supported by crews and specialist equipment from other regions, including amphibious vehicles and inflatable rescue boats. Transport remains heavily affected. While rail traffic between Foggia and Caserta has resumed, part of the Adriatic railway line is still suspended, with replacement bus services in operation. Meanwhile, local authorities in the Foggia area have requested a state of natural disaster, reigniting concerns over the fragility of infrastructure in one of Italy’s most vulnerable territories.
