The Guardia di Finanza of Reggio Calabria recovered about 400 kilograms of pure cocaine divided into 309 loaves in three operations conducted over the course of a week in the port of Gioia Tauro. A portion of the substance, which was concealed in a container from North America and contained a shipment of timber intended for the Middle East, was seized with the assistance of a scanner and dog units. Another shipment was seized along the coastline near the port, where it had just been deposited in an attempted sea “exfiltration” by a man who was arrested after using a small boat. Finally, divers from Vibo Valentia and Palermo confiscated the last batch of cocaine while inspecting the keel of a ship arriving from the American continent. The substance was hidden in a compartment within the vessel’s sea intakes. The total seized cargo, destined for the Italian and European markets, would have generated an estimated 60 million euros in revenue once subjected to cutting operations and targeted for drug distribution.
