The Pope has nominated Dr. Paola Fanelli as Director of the Holy See's Directorate for Human Resources, based within the Secretariat for the Economy. An appointment that is of particular significance when the complexity of the work apparatus that Dr. Fanelli will be responsible for overseeing is taken into account. The Holy See and Vatican City employ approximately 4,810 individuals, representing an articulated organizational reality that is, in many ways, unique in the world. The Human Resources Department handles all aspects of the employee life cycle, from selection to retirement. Its primary responsibilities include people selection and development, compensation management, and control over organizational efficiency. To lead this structure, a manager with a solid and cross-disciplinary profile has been chosen. Paola Fanelli, who graduated with honors in Operations Research from Bocconi University in Milan in 1989, obtained experience at Accenture, where she worked on organizational change and the redesign of HR procedures in a variety of industries. She later worked as the Program Manager at Mediocredito Centrale. She joined the BNL BNP Paribas Group in 2001 and has held key positions in People and Change Management, Communication, and Corporate Social Responsibility. The Vatican offers a wide range of employment, from technical and administrative to specialist skills in financial compliance, risk management, multilingual publication, and healthcare. A sophisticated machine that the new Director must modernize with the same tenacity displayed over thirty years in the banking and consulting industries.
