Italy and the United States have reaffirmed their partnership in research and innovation, strengthening bilateral cooperation in some of the most strategic scientific and technological fields. The commitment was renewed during the 15th U.S.-Italy Joint Commission Meeting on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, held in Washington on April 1 and 2.
The meeting brought together representatives from both governments and focused on expanding collaboration in areas considered crucial for the future, including quantum science, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing, fission and fusion energy, biotechnology and advanced materials. The two delegations also emphasized the importance of joint research projects, researcher mobility, shared infrastructure and stronger public-private partnerships.
During the talks, Italy announced a significant increase in funding for joint research initiatives for the 2027–2028 period, with resources set to more than double compared with previous years. The move is intended to support technology transfer, talent mobility and the broader social and economic impact of innovation. The signing of a joint declaration confirmed the determination of Rome and Washington to make scientific and technological cooperation a central pillar of their strategic partnership.
