Donal Trump's second term as president of the United States began on January 20, 2025, and the Italian shipbuilding giant Fincantieri's economic prospects in the United States appear to have been substantially reduced. At the end of last year, its subsidiary Fincantieri Marine Group (FMG) lost orders for four frigates under the Constellation program for the US Navy. If the cancellation of orders was attributed to delays in program implementation and cost increases, the Italian growth group's prospects in the American market are certainly pushed down by the weight of the current US federal administration's policies for the revitalization of the US maritime industry, which could put even companies with production bases in the United States in jeopardy. In the summer, Pierroberto Folgiero, the CEO and General Manager of Fincantieri, reaffirmed the Italian company's commitment to expanding in the United States, where it has significant investments currently in progress. The Trieste-based company recently announced the formation of the Forth Coast Shipbuilding Alliance, which includes two Great Lakes-based shipbuilders in the United States: Fraser Shipyards and Donjon Marine. FMG, Fraser Shipyards, and Donjon Marine stated that their collaboration is aimed at "bringing new shipbuilding programs and technologies to the Fourth Coast, in line with President Trump and his administration's efforts to rapidly increase domestic shipbuilding activity". Initially, the alliance will compete for a contract to build an icebreaker for the US Coast Guard.
