Anna Maria Bernini, the Minister of University and Research, has signed the Three-Year Research Plan, which establishes a new funding and programming model with a total of over 1.2 billion euros in allocations for the 2026-2028 period. Among the new initiatives are the PRIN Hybrid (59 million in 2026) to merge humanistic knowledge with technology such as AI and quantum computing, and the Synergy Grants (50 million in 2026) to strengthen collaboration between research and industry. The total amount allotted to research in 2026 alone exceeds 409 million euros. Uncertainty has always been a concern in Italian research: calls are delayed, fundings are given intermittently, and universities and research organizations are compelled to plan "by the day". The Plan now includes a definite timeframe — calls are due by April 30, outcomes by September 30 — as well as a single fund that consolidates previously disparate instruments. For researchers, this means being able to plan their work over multiple years.
