The Catholic University has arranged SOS – Scroll Off Sunday, a 24-hour period of complete abstinence from social media on Sunday, April 19. This event will be preceded by a progressive detox, which will include a four-hour shutdown on Friday, April 17, eight hours of scrolling on Saturday, April 18, and a full 24-hour scroll-off on Sunday, April 19. “Self-control, the responsibility that each of us has towards ourselves and others” is the principle behind the challenge promoted by students of the IPM Master – Ideation and production for audiovisual, cinema and digital media – presented in a hall of the Italian Senate. The program urges people to take a reasoned break from social media on Sunday 19 April, preceded by a gradual detox: 4 hours of shutdown on Friday 17 April, 8 hours on Saturday 18 April, and 24 hours of total scrolling off on Sunday. "Our training program is guided by the principle that a communication professional is effective when they are capable of employing the tools at their disposal with a sense of balance, reality, and respect", stated Massimo Locatelli, the director of the IPM master's program. The project, devised by eighteen students aged 21 to 30, is being recommended to the entire Italian population as a digital awareness exercise rather than an anti-social gesture. The initiative, which began in university classrooms, aims to become a nationwide phenomenon.
