A huge water emergency has begun in Abruzzo, where over 250,000 people will be without water for two days owing to a planned outage. The water supply in 19 municipalities, including the regional capitals of Pescara and Chieti, will be turned off from 6:00 a.m. on Monday, April 13, until Tuesday, April 14. The disruption is required to allow ACA, the regional water supply company, to do extensive upgrades on the Giardino pipeline. Once service is restored, the water will not be drinkable and cannot be used for drinking purposes until the Local Health Authority (ASL) gives the green light, which is expected around Friday. To deal with the emergency, the Prefecture will coordinate actions with the impacted municipalities. Over 20 tankers, cisterns strategically placed, and dedicated supplies will be made available to critical facilities such as hospitals, social services, and healthcare facilities. The power loss will create severe disruption throughout the region, closing schools in Pescara and Chieti, suspending university activities on the d'Annunzio campuses, and closing museums, markets, and municipal sports facilities. Disruption is also expected at the airport, where portable restrooms will be provided.
