A violent attack in the center of Paris, with a world-famous soccer player as the target, and a criminal mastermind overseeing everything from prison. This is the almost cinematic story involving Gianluigi Donnarumma, goalkeeper for the Italian national team and Manchester City. On the night of July 20, 2023, a group of robbers stormed into the player's residence on the Champs-Élysées, one of the French capital's most prestigious areas. The stolen items, which included jewelry, purses, and luxury watches, had a value of approximately one million euros. But beyond the economic value, what was most striking was the brutality of the attack. According to French authorities, Donnarumma was hit on the head and injured, while his partner, Alessia Elefante, was tied with cables, beaten, and threatened with knives. Although both survived the attack, the incident sparked severe worries about the safety of celebrities, particularly athletes, in major European cities. The inquiry revealed an unexpected discovery: the suspected instigator of the crime, a 21-year-old known as "Ganito" (real name Ilyas Kerbouch), allegedly planned the entire robbery while already in prison. He apparently recruited gang members and coordinated the operation remotely, showing that even imprisonment is not always a barrier for more sophisticated criminal groups. The attackers apparently entered the building through the roof, similar to recent instances in Paris. Among these is the May 2022 attack on Italian chef Simone Zanoni, who was also the victim of a brutal robbery at home. But the story does not stop there. The investigation has also uncovered a worrisome gang score-settling culture. Following the crime, the alleged initiator apparently ordered the kidnapping and torture of two collaborators, who were most likely accused of mishandling some of the fortunes. The torture is said to have lasted at least 24 hours, and Ganito apparently followed it live from prison on his phone, filming the entire incident while analyzing photographs of the stolen items. The repercussions were tragic: one of the two tortured guys committed suicide in prison. Meanwhile, Ganito managed to escape last month with the help of accomplices disguised as police officers, before being arrested again a few weeks later.
