An ordinance has been signed by Taranto Mayor Pietro Bitetti, which suspends operations at the former Ilva thermoelectric power facility, which is currently under extraordinary administration run by Adi Energia. The regulation calls for a 30-day shutdown, pending the submission of an emissions reduction plan and subsequent approval by the appropriate authorities. The decision is based on the failure to submit the required plan following the publication of the 2024 Health Damage Assessment for the Taranto area, prepared by ARPA Puglia, ARESS, and the Local Health Authority (ASL), which emphasizes the need for action to reduce the health risk associated with arsenic, nickel, and cobalt emissions. However, sources with knowledge of the situation have indicated that the plant's suspension would render it impossible to recover and manage gases from the steelmaking cycle. This would necessitate the closure of the hot-works area, which is the focal point of the Taranto plant's production. The suspension would also jeopardize the facilities' electrical supply, potentially affecting not only the Taranto site, but also the group's other factories in Northern Italy.
