In Italy, methane gas production is growing, while oil production could see the doubling of the Val d’Agri fields in Basilicata. About 85% of Italy’s crude oil is already extracted from this area. Further investments by Eni and Shell could have significant effects, although the country will remain dependent on foreign supply. According to Ministry of Environment and Energy Security figures, over 3.23 billion cubic meters of gas were generated in 2025, a 12.2% increase over the previous year's production of roughly 2.9 billion cubic meters. Oil output, on the other hand, has decreased, reducing from 4.37 to 3.86 million tons, an 11.5% decrease largely attributable to Basilicata. The two main fields are Val d’Agri, operated by Eni (60%) with Shell Italia (40%), and Tempa Rossa, where TotalEnergies holds 50% alongside Shell and Mitsui with 25% each. Both are among the largest onshore fields in Western Europe, but they are gradually decreasing. Hence the necessity for new wells. If authorized, according to Shell Italia CEO Joao Santos Rosa, Val d’Agri could double production, increasing from the current 40,000 to 80,000 barrels per day.
