The soccer world is mourning the death of Alexander Manninger, former Austrian national team goalkeeper and, among others, Juventus player, who died at the age of 48 in a road accident in Austria. According to local media, the crash occurred around 8:20 a.m. near an unguarded railway crossing. Manninger’s vehicle, a Volkswagen minivan, collided with a passing train. Emergency personnel arrived swiftly, but nothing could be done for the former goalkeeper. The approximately 25 passengers and train driver were uninjured. Authorities are still reconstructing the collision, including verifying the operation of the traffic lights and the conditions at the moment of impact. Throughout his career, Manninger competed in various European championships. Raised in Salzburg, he was the first Austrian to join Arsenal, where he made 39 appearances and won the league title, the FA Cup, and two Charity Shields. In Italy, he played for Fiorentina, Bologna, Brescia, Siena, Torino, and Juventus, where he won the Scudetto in 2011-2012 as second-choice goalkeeper behind Gianluigi Buffon. He also played for the Austrian national team 33 times, defending their goal in numerous international competitions. Numerous condolence messages have poured from the soccer community. Juventus remembered him, highlighting his human and professional qualities, speaking of "humility, dedication, and uncommon seriousness", while former teammate Giorgio Chiellini expressed his sorrow, remembering him as "an exemplary teammate and a person of great value". Torino, where Manninger played in the 2002-2003 season, also expressed their condolences to the former goalkeeper’s family.
