Alice Bellandi creates history. The Italian athlete is the first to win gold medals at the Olympic Games, World Championships, and European Championships in judo.In the -78 kg category at the continental event in Tbilisi, Georgia, the Lombard athlete defeated Britain’s Shelley Ludford, Russia’s Aleksandra Babintseva, France’s Kaila Issoufi, and another British judoka, Emma Reid, claiming the final title she needed to complete an extraordinary treble. Celebrations also for Gennaro Pirelli, who triumphed in the -100 kg category, defeating Montenegro’s Danilo Pantic, Poland’s Piotr Kuczera, Switzerland’s Daniel Eich, Russia’s Niiaz Bilalov, and the Netherlands’ Simeon Catharina. Asya Tavano closed a memorable day: after beating Ukraine’s Ruslana Bulavina, she lost to Croatia’s Helena Vukovic but bounced back, defeating teammate Erica Simonetti and Estonia’s Emma-Melis Aktas in the repechage to secure bronze in the +78 kg category. Italy leaves Tbilisi with four total medals, including Odette Giuffrida’s bronze in the -52 kg.
