The European population is steadily dropping and is expected to fall by 11.7% by 2100. 53 million fewer people in the EU. This reduction will not spare Italy: by the turn of the century, the country's population is expected to be reduced to 44.7 million, down from 58.9 million in 2025 (-24%). This is the "diagnosis" resulting from Eurostat's population predictions, which estimate the EU's population trend from 2025 to 2100. The findings are based on the premise of partial convergence in EU fertility, mortality, and migration patterns. The EU population reached 451.8 million in 2025, having resumed growth in 2022 after being interrupted by the COVID-19 epidemic in 2021. Looking ahead, the population is predicted to grow steadily over the next three years, reaching 453.3 million in 2029.
