The first AI platform developed in Italy is launched. Engineering, a Rome-based firm among the main actors in digital transformation, introduces EngGpt 2 and its new IS-IA (Italy's Sovereign Intelligence Architecture), with the goal of establishing a "sovereign", governable, and transparent artificial intelligence, beginning in Rome. The endeavor originates from a rising understanding among corporations and institutions: most AI solutions on the market today rely on models generated elsewhere, which are difficult to check and manage. This constraint for Engineering may result in a progressive loss of expertise and strategic value. A robust infrastructure is needed to enable the use, ownership, and control of algorithms across time. EngGPT 2, a large-scale linguistic model developed primarily in Rome, is the foundation of the project. It has been trained on a vast quantity of data, including 2.5 trillion tokens (words or parts of words), and has 16 billion parameters. A substantial portion of the data is in Italian. The goal is to increase understanding of context, language nuances, and regulatory specifics in the country, making the technology more relevant to commercial and public administration demands.
