Adriano Anzanello, a Venetian entrepreneur who revolutionized Italian cuisine by eradicating the crust from bread and thereby creating the tramezzino, the sandwich found on the counters of every bar, has passed away at the age of 81. Adriano co-founded Arte Bianca with his brother Alberto in 1968. "Pan piuma" was the flagship product: white bread that was crustless and light, as the name implies. Bread production swiftly grew from a small workshop to an industrial company. Gabriele d'Annunzio developed the phrase "tramezzino" in 1925 at the request of a Turin café looking for an Italian term for "sandwich", an English word considered inappropriate. The poet proposed “tramezzino", from “in mezzo” (in between) two slices of bread. Anzanello did the rest.
