The Italian business system began 2026 with an unexpected sign of vitality: 690 more enterprises registered between January and March, reflecting a difference of 105,051 new registrations and 104,361 closures. This outcome deviates from the tendency, given that the first quarter has historically been punished by the consolidation of closures accrued at the end of the year. The only comparable precedent in the past decade dates back to 2021, but within the exceptional and distorted context of the pandemic. Today's balance, on the other hand, arises under normal conditions, notably as a result of a large contraction in closures, while the number of openings remained unchanged when compared to the same period last year. The quarterly growth rate consequently stands at +0.01%, an improvement over the same period in both 2025 (-0.05%) and 2024 (-0.18%). As of March 31, 2026, the total number of registered enterprises in Italy was 5,811,877. These numbers are derived from Movimprese, a statistical analysis undertaken by Unioncamere and InfoCamere using the Chambers of Commerce's Business Register. The positive quarterly balance is entirely driven by the dynamic growth of joint-stock companies, which increased by 15,739 units (+0.80%), outpacing the same period in 2025 (+0.70%). This performance compensates for declines in sole proprietorships (-9,669 units, -0.33%) and partnerships (-4,879, -0.61%), indicating a structural trend: Italian entrepreneurship is rapidly transitioning to more structured and capitalized legal forms.
