Italian tennis star Camila Giorgi has unexpectedly stated her intention to return to compete in 2027, despite formally retiring from the professional circuit in May 2024. The news was made via an Instagram story in which the former Italian number one responded to fan questions, confirming the possibility of a return: an unexpected decision that reopens a chapter in her sporting career. Currently pregnant, Giorgi had already hinted at this in a mid-March interview, stating “never say never” about returning to the court and admitting she misses tennis. On the same occasion, she also said that she trains informally with her spouse, Andrea Pasutti, a former Argentine tennis player turned coach to whom Giorgi is married. The couple is expecting a baby boy, due in September. Over the course of her career, Giorgi has reached the 26th position in the WTA women's world rankings, the international professional tennis circuit. She has won four championships in total, the most prestigious being the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal in 2021, which is one of the top-tier competitions just behind the four Grand Slams. There, she defeated top-tier opponents, including Elise Mertens, Petra Kvitová, Coco Gauff, and Jessica Pegula, before winning the final against Karolína Plíšková. Other achievements include victory in's-Hertogenbosch (2015), Linz (2018), and Mérida (2023). She has also reached six major circuit finals throughout her career, including Katowice and Linz in 2014, Katowice again in 2015 and 2016, and Washington and the Bronx in 2019. The announcement of a possible return in 2027, although not accompanied by technical or sporting details, therefore opens up an unexpected scenario for one of the most recognizable Italian tennis players of the last decade.
