What seemed like a done deal has now fallen apart: Marilyn Manson will not be using a convent in Ferrara as a backstage area for his July 11 concert. The arrangement, which had already raised eyebrows, was ultimately scrapped, leaving the artist to find alternative accommodations. According to Mayor Alan Fabbri, the decision appears to stem from intervention by the local Curia. The nuns, who had initially agreed to provide support, reportedly said they had received instructions “from above” to withdraw, not only from Manson’s concert, but from involvement in the entire Ferrara Summer Festival. Fabbri expressed disappointment, emphasizing that in his view the Church should promote openness and dialogue, especially toward those who might be seen, in ecclesiastical terms, as “lost sheep.” He also thanked the nuns for their longstanding support, stressing that he does not hold them responsible for the decision. The bishop, however, firmly rejected any suggestion of diocesan interference, stating that the nuns are fully capable of making their own decisions. The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the city administration and Church authorities. Despite the controversy, the concert will go ahead, just without the logistical backing of the convent.
