The Lebanese village of Debel now has a new Crucifixion statue, thanks to the intervention of Commander Diodato Abagnara and the entire Italian contingent of the UNIFIL mission, who decided to donate a new crucifix, which will be placed in the same location as the statue destroyed a few days ago by an IDF soldier, the Israeli army. Images of the statue's position "fill the heart and represent a powerful message of hope, dialogue, and peace", Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in a statement. The statue of Christ in the Christian village of Debel, located in southern Lebanon, was recently damaged in an attack that was attributed to an IDF soldier. The Italian military's gesture is not only religious, but also diplomatic and political, since it demonstrates Italy's aim to present itself as a force for peace and the safeguarding of coexistence in a highly vulnerable region. The episode comes after an already tense period for UNIFIL: in previous days, Meloni had condemned as “unacceptable” warning shots fired at an Italian convoy of the mission in southern Lebanon. Palazzo Chigi emphasized that Italian forces are within the UN Security Council's mandate, and their safety must be ensured. Maurizio Gasparri, chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, called it "a concrete manifestation of those values that have always characterized our Armed Forces' commitment to international missions. These vivid testimonies remind us that when values are embodied, they transform into a living force capable of bridging even the most difficult settings".
