Two snapping turtles were recently discovered in the Torre Flavia environmental area, located between Ladispoli and Cerveteri, just outside Rome. Native to North America, this species is classified as invasive in Italy and is considered one of the most aggressive in the globe. The first encounter occurred during an environmental initiative, while the second specimen was discovered nearby along a fishing trail. The close proximity of the two animals raises concerns that these are not isolated cases, but rather a well-established colony. Chelydra serpentina is known for its strength and the speed with which it can strike, inflicting even very serious bites. Its spread is frequently linked to illegal trading and the abandonment of specimens bought as pets. In addition to the safety issues, the species threatens the local ecosystem by competing with native wildlife in the absence of natural predators. Experts are conducting tests to evaluate the specimens' DNA and features in order to better understand their origins and control their spread. Authorities recommend keeping a safe distance in case of sightings and immediately contacting emergency services.
