The Emilia-Romagna area has the most patent applications per capita in Italy, at 229 per million residents. This statistic not only doubles that of the country's key manufacturing sectors, but it also solidifies its place at the forefront of European innovation. This finding is based on data from the European Patent Office, which shows a regional system capable of combining industrial research, advanced manufacturing, and continual technological investment. In 2025, patent applications filed with the EPO by inventors in Emilia-Romagna reached 1,022, accounting for 21.4% of the national total and a 10.8% increase over the previous year. This acceleration solidifies Emilia-Romagna's second-place ranking in Italy in absolute volumes, trailing only Lombardy, but propels it to the top of the list in population terms. While Italy as a whole has 80.9 patents per million people, far lower than the main European countries, the region has more than 200, nearing the levels of the continent's most advanced regions. Emilia's patent filings are concentrated in the packaging, automotive, and pharmaceutical industries, where regional production has established a sustained competitive advantage over the years. This confirms an industrial model that continues to evolve by using its strengths.
