In 2025, patent applications filed with the EPO by inventors in Emilia-Romagna reached 1,022, accounting for 21.4% of the national total and a 10.8% increase over the previous year. This acceleration solidifies Emilia-Romagna's second-place ranking in Italy in absolute volumes, trailing only Lombardy, but propels it to the top of the list in population terms. While Italy as a whole has 80.9 patents per million people, far lower than the main European countries, the region has more than 200, nearing the levels of the continent's most advanced regions.
