Pia Donata Berlucchi, a leading figure in the wine industry of Brescia and a member of one of Franciacorta’s most emblematic families, passed away on Monday, April 27, at the age of 83. News of her death has sparked widespread grief, extending far beyond her native region. She was widely respected not only for her entrepreneurial leadership but also for her dedication to promoting wine culture in Italy.
For more than four decades, Berlucchi served as CEO of her family’s historic winery, later becoming its president in the past decade. Under her long and steady leadership, the company strengthened its reputation as one of Italy’s finest producers, while maintaining a deep connection to its local roots. Employees remember her as a kind, humane leader and a tireless worker.
Throughout her career, she also held prominent institutional and industry roles. She served as an advisor to the Bank of Italy in Brescia, was national president of the Association of Women in Wine, and vice president of the National Organization of Wine Tasters (ONAV). In this latter role, she helped establish the first “Consulta del Vino,” an initiative aimed at fostering collaboration across the sector and promoting a shared wine culture.
Reserved yet authoritative, Berlucchi embodied a modern vision of entrepreneurship, one that successfully blended tradition with innovation. A true ambassador of Franciacorta, she played a key role in bringing the values and excellence of her territory to the global stage.
Widowed ten years ago by Brescia physician Gregorio Rizzo, she is survived by her two children, Matilde - who is involved in the family business - and Sebastiano.
