Nessy Guerra, an Italian citizen from Sanremo and the mother of a three-year-old Italian-Egyptian girl, was sentenced to six months in prison in Egypt on appeal for alleged adultery, a crime under Egyptian law. The sentence confirms the initial judgment from February of last year, which was the result of a complaint submitted by her Italian-Egyptian ex-husband. Following the ruling, the woman voiced her despair in a video posted on social media, in which she cried out in fear for herself and her child. "I'm not sure how to ask for help anymore. I'm afraid of losing my daughter and ending up in prison", she added, detailing how she had frequently asked for assistance but had received no firm answers. Guerra maintains that she tried to leave Egypt precisely to protect her child from a situation that had become unsustainable. The Foreign Ministry has been following the situation for some time, and through the Italian Embassy in Cairo and the local consular network, it is giving legal aid, protection, and support to the Italian citizen and child. Italian officials have repeatedly highlighted the issue with their Egyptian counterparts, emphasizing the need of protecting the rights of both the mother and the child. At the core of the issue is a complicated custody dispute: the child has been unable to depart Egypt as a result of a travel restriction that was imposed by judges at the father's request. The case has also been the subject of diplomatic discussions between Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani and his Egyptian counterpart. At the same time, the ex-husband is currently facing a number of legal proceedings in Italy, including allegations of abuse, child abduction, and revenge porn, which are purportedly linked to the material that was used in the complaints filed in Egypt.
