The aluminum Spectre naval drones designed by US-based Saildrone will be built at the Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM) shipyard, which is part of the Fincantieri Marine Group, the US division of the Italian Fincantieri Group. The autonomous naval vessels will weigh 250 tons, measure 52 meters long, and reach a top speed of 30 knots. The drone will focus on anti-submarine warfare activities, but it will also be capable of carrying out other types of attacks. Spectre will have a range of 3,280 nautical miles in calm waters and 2,790 nautical miles in extremely rough seas. In addition, the drone will feature a concealed cargo deck that can accommodate containerized cargo, ranging from two 40-foot containers to five 20-foot containers, or a combination of intermediate configurations, with a maximum load capacity of over 70 tons. Construction of the drones will begin soon, with the first scheduled for sea trials early next year. The FMM shipyard has the capacity to produce up to five Spectre units per year.
